how-stretching-helpsWhen thinking about an exercise program, experts agree that cardio, strength, and flexibility training are key components. Cardio works the heart, while strength training builds muscles. Flexibility training protects the joints. Here are a few stretching benefits that could cause you to make time for this type of fitness.

Paul's Advice

"Stretching is extremely important before a workout if you want to avoid injury. You run the risk of seriously damaging muscle and joints. Stretching post workout helps prevent injury by keeping muscles flexible."

Lisa's Advice

"Stretching has endless benefits like increasing flexibility, shortening recovery time, and insuring your joints stay within a greater range of motion."

Stephanie's Advice

"If you do more meditative stretching, such as yoga, you'll be training your nervous system to move into a relaxed state more efficiently. You'll also be preventing muscle soreness."

Ziba's Advice

"Bottomline is stretching keeps you looking younger because it helps your movement quality from being stiff. "

Marisol's Advice

She believes the benefits of stretching increase mobility, release toxins, and lengthen muscles after contracting in strength conditioning for long lean strong lines.

strength-training-on-treadmills-videoThe treadmill is a great piece of cardio equipment. Whether you walk, jog, or climb, it can help build your aerobic capacity.  Equally important is strength training. The treadmill can be a place to incorporate strength moves as well. Find out from our fitness expert, Andrea Metcalf, how the treadmill can be a beneficial interval strength and cardio workout.

Strength Training Treadmill Routine

Start with a quick warm up for 3-5 minutes.

Lunges on Treadmill

Lower the speed to 0.6mph and try walking lunges. Opt for deep lunges with great posture for one minute. Increase speed to 3.5 or 4.0 miles per hour. Walk for two minutes. Repeat this three times.

Mountain Climbers

Lower speed to 1.0mph. Place hands on the rails near the front and drive knees forward, keeping hips low and arms straight. Climb for one minute and then stand up for two minutes, walking or jogging. Repeat this series three times.

Jump Back

Reduce speed to 0.6 miles per hour and step off the treadmill.  Place hands on the floor, facing away from the treadmill, and straddle feet to side rails.  Put feet on the bed and allow the belt to pull knees towards chest. Spring legs back to plank. Repeat for 10-15 repetitions or one minute and alternate with two minutes of walking or jogging.

This is a great total body strength building workout. Let us know if you've ever done these exercises on a treadmill before!
