How did you get into blogging?
I started my blog a little over six years ago! I had no idea what a blog was. I loved to cook but I was losing track of all my recipes. My Mom told me that she had just heard about something called a blog, but she thought a blog was an online recipe box. She told me I should make a blog, and type all my recipes in so I would not lose them. The rest as they say is history!
One other funny story is that three years ago I was at a kids birthday party talking about recipes and one of the other Moms was talking about a recipe. I told her that I had a similar recipe on my blog and it turned out she had been using my recipe for years! Once I knew other people were visiting my blog I decided that I better fix it up and make it better. That was the point when I started to take blogging more seriously and turn it into a business.
Tell us about your family - pets included!
I met my husband, Dan, my first day of college. I was an Education major and he was a business major. It was love at first sight and together we were live-in nannies for five years while we went to college. It was a great way to live in a beautiful house and get paid at the same time! After college we had our first baby and then went on to have four more kids. We also added our rescue dog Molly two years ago.
What are your goals for your blog?
My goal is to make Cook With 5 Kids a great resource for other parents. I love to share recipes, new snacks we are eating, cars we are driving, and places we are traveling.
Who are some of your favorite fellow bloggers, and who or what inspires you outside of the blogosphere?
I love to read! I just never have enough time to do it. I look up to many other bloggers. One of my favorite bloggers is my inspiration, Misty Nelson, of FrostedEvents.com. She has really helped me with my blog over the years. We met on our way to a blogging conference two years ago and we have been best friends ever since!
Who would you invite to your ultimate dinner party?
I would invite my parents, my family, JFK, Steven Spielberg, Kim Kardashian, and Julia Child. What a fun dinner that would be!
Where do you live, and what’s your favorite part about living where you do?
I love living in Virginia. It is quite, peaceful, and a great place to raise a family.
What’s your favorite time of the year?
I love spring, it is the gateway to summer and time off from school! The weather is perfect and everyone is happy.
What are some of your favorite things (think Oprah style) - all the little things that make your day better!
Oh my, all my favorite things that I cannot live without must include my iPhone, my MacBook, my family, healthy snacks, water, fruit, comfortable shoes, eyeliner and lipstick, a fun car, and my paper calendar (can't live without that).
What’s your personal motto (if you have one)?
Always stay positive, even through the toughest times.
I have many day jobs! First I am a Mom to my five kids. During the school year I run a school lunch program with my oldest son who is a chef. When I am not working I love blogging and photography and I love the fast pace of social media.
We to share stories about women who inspire us. Who’s your role model/which women do you find inspiring?
My aforementioned friend Misty from FrostedEvents is a great role model. She is one of the smartest women I know. She has so much knowledge and teaches me a million things when we are together. I love attending conferences with her because we make time to learn. She is an inspiration and a great Mom to her son, Brady.
Thank you Sara! You're definitely invited to cook with us anytime.
