As celebrity moms like Amal Clooney and Beyonce prepare for the arrival of their twins, many mothers-to-be around the globe are wondering how their own chances of having twins compare to those of the stars. While there are many superstitions surrounding the conception of twins, the actual likelihood of getting a two-for-one deal is based on heredity and multiple modes of conception.

Your Diet

Women who are vegans and vegetarians are less likely to have twins than women who eat a diet high in animal proteins, according to a study originally published in the Journal of Reproductive Medicine. That’s because the type of diet a woman maintains can cause subtle hormonal changes in the body that can determine variables related to pregnancy.

Fertility Treatments

If you are undergoing fertility treatments to improve your chances of conception, you’ll also improve your chances of having twins. That’s because fertility treatments increase a woman’s chances of ovulation. However, fertility treatments come with certain risks like ectopic pregnancy, pelvic infection and high blood pressure - so it's not recommended to go through them just to have twins.

Breastfeeding

Women who conceive a child while breastfeeding are more likely to conceive twins. According to VeryWell.com, one study found the rate of twins to be 11.4 percent among breastfeeding women, as compared to just 1.1 percent in non-breastfeeding women. However, breastfeeding has also been known to eliminate a woman’s chances of conception because of hormonal fluctuations.

Number of Current Children

A mother who has already conceived and given birth to children is more likely to have twins than a mother who is giving birth to her first child. Often times, it’s more likely for a woman who has already given birth to large family to have twins.

Family History

If a family contains a pair of fraternal twins your chances of having twins automatically increases. If there is a pair of identical twins somewhere in the family, a woman’s chances of ovulating more than one egg per cycle also increases, thus improving the likelihood of her giving birth to multiples.

Age

Women who are 30-years-old or older are more likely to have twins because of a hormone called follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). The older a woman gets, the more FSH is needed to help a woman conceive, which means she's also more likely to have twins.
